Write to your U.S. representative today to urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.
Pet Sitters International applauds Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, who introduced H.R. 3501, the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act. If enacted, H.R. 3501 would amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow an annual tax deduction of up to $3500 for qualified pet care expenses. Specifically, “qualified pet care expenses” would be defined as funds spent in connection with providing care (including veterinary care) for a legally owned, domesticated animal. Presently, H.R. 3501 awaits action in the House Committee on Ways and Means.
Let us know how you feel about this proposed tax break for pet owners in the comments section below and, more importantly, let your elected representatives know how you feel and what should be included as pet-care expenses!

2I think it would be great!! i have three cats and also have health insurance which really doesn’t help at all. I have to get my one cats teeth cleaned in 2 weeks, and i have to pull out $1600.00 !!!! Its expensive but i don’t want him to be in any pain if i let it go. If it was a child I would have to do it. These cats are our children, since not being able to have any. But believe me, the food, the vets, the toys, its not cheap. i just but one in today for its shots, 140.00!! please pass this bill

3OMG!! This is the VERY idea I recently had myself!! I work for a non-profit,spay/neuter rescue group and of course we are seeing more surrendered pets due to the hard times and high cost of vet care. If this were to be included in the federal tax code it would be a huge help to animal owners. My idea went as far as to restrict it to rescue animals. Either way it’s an awesome idea if I don’t say so myself!! Please spread the word JM in ABQ

6Most of us animal lovers have more than one animal, and many of
us have several “recue dogs and cats”(even horses) at any one
given time. They are wonderful companions and usually we can get them into a satisfactory, happy home withpatience. But, yes,
it always is more expensive and they are so grateful to have a real
home.

7I am always strapped for money because I rescue so many dogs, many of which have medical problems that I need to take care of. Also, there is the cost of food, travel expences to pick up abandoned, neglected and abused dogs. I take them to veterinarian, get their vaccinations, advertise and take them to adoption events to find them loving homes and to find qualified foster volunteers.
Rescuers take a financial burden off local government shelters that otherwise the shelter would have to take in and by taking dogs out of the shelters to find homes for them. Those steps help to significally cut the costs government shelters face.
Being able to take a tax deduction would really help rescuers.
